For Anyone Who Wants to Add a Little Culture to Their Life
Guest post by Lauren Skilken — Washington University, St. Louis
While we all worship our favorite superstars, it seems like anyone with a video camera, a little bit of Flash web design, a simple tune, and a gimmick can be a rock star today.
Here are a few international standouts that deserve recognition for their interesting style hilarious lyrics, and catchy tunes you find yourself singing in the shower over and over again. If you’re looking for a good way to waste 10 minutes of your life, check out the artists who have earned their fame without the help of airtime on MTV or VH1:
Gunther

Gunther and the Sunshine Girls have discovered a whole new level of sexual innuendo with The Ding Dong Song. Gunther is a 29-year-old Swede with a cheesy mustache, hot sun glasses, and a tight ass. Of course, he’s all business in the front and party in the back with his impressive 80’s mullet. He’s the type of guy who would try to feed you a horrible pick-up line in a sleazy singles bar. Fortunately for him in his video fantasy, the girls are all over him, and pop his cork.
Milk and Cereal
Take a carton of milk, a box of Cheerios, and a web camera, and you have the makings for an Internet hit. These two college boys have given new meaning to America’s favorite breakfast food. There are a few alternate versions floating around that include Yoda or random ethnic groups.
Here is the original: Milk and Cereal
Here is the better Asian version: Asian Milk and Cereal
O-Zone
O-Zone is a boy’s band from Romania that’s extremely popular in the international market. They have a hit single Dragostea Din Tei on their Discozone album. These boys surpass typical boy band antics as they randomly animate themselves, run amok in an airplane, and then dance on the wings. Their single has become one of the biggest parody hits on the web and the sound track has popped up on countless Flash web animations. To appreciate the parodies, you’ve got to see the original: Dragostea Din Tei video (Windows Media format).
Yes, the lyrics are mindless. Check out the Japanese Flash animation version, too.
Geek Genius
After seeing the original Dragostea Din Tei, you can appreciate the best best lip sync version. A lot of people think this is better than the original. Who says computer nerds can’t rock?
Green Leaves Yatta!

Japan could possibly top the list for the weirdest video of the year. Silly Go Lucky [lyrics], a very popular Japanese television comedy show, features weird humor, strange costumes, and equally strange antics. The actors put together a boy band number called Yatta! Dressed in Speedos and fig leaves, they dance to a simple and catchy tune. The song is about some college grads trying to face the problems of the world. As long as they keep their fig leaves on, they should be just fine.
